Vaisala Weather Sensors FAQ: What I Check Before Buying a WXT536

3. What accuracy can I actually expect from Vaisala weather sensors?

Vaisala publishes datasheet specs: for example, the WXT536 wind speed accuracy is ±0.3 m/s or 3% (whichever is greater), and wind direction is ±3°. Barometric pressure is ±0.5 hPa at +20°C. These are solid numbers, and they match what I've seen in field audits, provided the sensor is installed correctly.

But "accurately installed" is doing a lot of work. If the mounting pole is in the wake of a rooftop HVAC unit, you'll get turbulence errors that have nothing to do with the sensor. Per the WMO CIMO Guide (WMO-No. 8), wind sensors should be mounted in open terrain with obstacles at least 10 times their height away. I've approved Vaisala sensors, and I've rejected installations where the sensor itself was fine but the siting was wrong.

4. Do I need a Vaisala data logger, or can I use my own?

If you're using it for regulatory reporting, don't wait until after the audit. I've seen a 0.8 hPa offset on a three-year-old sensor that was "still working." That's enough to fail many environmental reporting requirements.

The good news: Vaisala offers factory recalibration with a calibration certificate. But plan for downtime. We budget for a spare transmitter so we swap, ship the old one, and keep the station running. That's easier than explaining a data gap to a regulator.

7. One question people forget: can the WXT536 handle hail and lightning?

This is the question I ask during spec review. The WXT536 has no moving parts, which helps with hail and icing compared to mechanical anemometers. But "no moving parts" doesn't mean indestructible. It needs a proper grounding system and surge protection. If your site has lightning, budget for a separate lightning protection kit and a ground ring that meets local code.

I learned this lesson after we lost a sensor to a storm surge. We saved perhaps $150 by skipping surge protection. The replacement cost, shipping, and labor was close to $1,100. That's the classic penny-wise, pound-foolish mistake.
